The string for all models is actually a nylon filament that will become brittle with age, and for this reason you should replace the string at the start of each new lawn care season. Unplug the spark plug wire from the spark plug as a safety precaution. Lay the Craftsman trimmer down horizontally and rotate it for access to the spool. Pull the tap knob firmly to remove the spool. The tap knob is on the side of the inner spool. If you are replacing an aged string that has become brittle unwind the string from the spool and dispose of it. Ensure no dirt or debris remain on the spindle. Insert one end of the 20-foot nylon trimmer string into the hole in the center of the spool. Wind the trimmer string tightly onto the spool counterclockwise. There will be small arrows on the inner lip of the spool indicating the correct direction. Wind the string from side to side on the spool and try to prevent excessive overlap. Feed the other end of the trimmer string through the hole in the trimmer head until about 6 inches are extending from it. Insert the line into the exit hole on the hub. Align the notch with the exit hole and replace the spool back onto the spindle by pressing on it until it snaps into place. Pull the string taut and cut it with shears to a length that leaves 1 inch of clearance between the end of the string and the guard. Reconnect the spark plug wire to the spark plug.
